TC 3-25.26 / FM 3-25.26 — Map Reading and Land Navigation
TC 3-25.26 is the Army's current guide for map reading and land navigation — superseding the earlier FM 3-25.26. The skills are the same: every soldier must master them to operate effectively in any terrain without relying on GPS.
Map reading fundamentals, six-digit and eight-digit grid coordinates, lensatic compass use, shooting an azimuth, terrain association, declination diagram and grid/magnetic north conversion, resection, intersection, pace count, and night navigation.
Land navigation is tested at boards because it is a fundamental soldier skill. Boards ask about grid coordinates, the declination diagram, and how to shoot an azimuth. Knowing the difference between grid north, magnetic north, and true north — and how to convert between them — demonstrates the technical competence boards expect.
