Why does the Army have so many publication types?
Each type serves a different purpose in the doctrine hierarchy. ARs are binding policy — violating them has legal consequences. ADPs establish foundational principles. FMs and ATPs provide techniques and procedures. TCs address specific training needs. Knowing which type you're dealing with tells you how much flexibility you have.
Which publications matter most for NCOs?
For day-to-day NCO business: AR 670-1 (uniform standards), AR 600-20 (command policy and EO), AR 623-3 (NCOERs), AR 27-10 (UCMJ and Article 15), and FM 6-22 (leadership). These are the pubs that come up in counselings, boards, and legal actions.
Where can I find the official publications?
All official Army publications are available at armypubs.army.mil. Always verify against the current version — publications are updated periodically and superseded versions are not authoritative. If you're using a citation for formal action, confirm the current version with your unit S1 or JAG.
